Nowadays, a considerable percentage of the population around the world encounters infertility problems and seek other means to achieve their goal of procreation. One of the most popular treatments in this field is named IVF, In Vitro Fertilization.
Female infertility is the result of several factors. Some of them relate to genetic factors or medical conditions (such as diminished ovarian reserve and sexually transmitted infections) and some are the result of our way of life and our preferences - mainly the age factor. If the reason for starting late is pursuit of a career, the lack of a steady relationship or financial aspects, the result is similar. Research shows that fertility starts declining after age 27 and drops at a greater rate after age 35. Body weight and smoking also contribute to infertility.
A common misconception attributes infertility to women alone. Male infertility can be the result of several reasons including hormone disorders, illness, reproductive anatomy or trauma. In many cases the cause is attributed to both male and female factors.
Diagnosis of infertility should be conducted by a Reproductive Endocrinologist A reproductive endocrinologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating people with reproductive disorders. and includes the review of the patients' medical history and a physical exam. The diagnosis will also include lab tests (including hormone testing and FSH and estrogen measurement) and imaging.
Whilst diagnosed, several methods of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) will be suggested. The most prevalent procedure is IVF - In Vitro Fertilisation.
IVF is a process by which a matured egg is collected from the ovary is then fertilized by sperm outside the womb, in a lab. This procedure will include several stages including pre-treatment consultation, artificial stimulation of the ovaries to increase the egg production, egg collection (usually performed under ultrasound guidance), embryo development examination and the embryo transfer to the patient's uterus. The combined procedures are known as an IVF cycle.
An individualized protocol is important to ensure the best chance of success for each patient.
Israel's policy towards IVF earned it the reputation of a world leader in IVF treatments. The government's support and desire to enlarge the population combined with the biblical commandment to procreate with the significance and general notion of family definition to include children turned Israel into a specialist in this field.
For these reasons, a healthy competition evolved thus raising the quality of the laboratories and the skill experience of the embryology staff and reproductive endocrinologists.
Another effect of the competition is the lower price rates imposed on these procedures in Israel.
