A radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also known as Catheter Ablation, is a non-surgical medical procedure designated for patients who suffer from Atrial Fibrillation (the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia), meaning patients with abnormal electrical activity in the heart.
The purpose of this procedure is to destroy the cells and area that is causing the problem. During this procedure the doctor will precisely ablate, using a catheter, heart cells that are causing a heart rhythm problem in addition to destroying heart tissue that may return and cause the problem to reappear in the future.
The doctor will insert the catheter, a very thin and flexible wire, into a vein in the groin and thread it up through the vein and into the heart aimed at the site that is causing the arrhythmia problems. At that point, radiofrequency energy is transmitted to the pathway and carefully destroys selected heart muscle cells that are the cause of the Atrial Fibrillation.
After the operation your doctor will monitor you heart rate and rhythm. You be may be released on the same day of the procedure or hospitalized for a short period of 1-2 days, depending on the doctor who performed the procedure. You will of course receive the proper instructions for the remaining recovery period.
