A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the female uterus is removed from the body. When undergoing a hysterectomy, the surgeon can perform a partial removal which includes the uterine body alone, or a total removal that also includes the fundus and cervix.
The uterus – a hollow, pear-shaped organ located in the lower abdomen – is a major female hormone-responsive reproductive sex organ. It is responsible for the productions of the female hormones estrogenCompounds functioning as the primary female sex hormones (Source: Wikipedia). and progesteroneA steroid hormone involved in the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy (supports gestation) and the embryogenesis (Source: Wikipedia). that are available in a woman in her reproductive years as well as protecting the fetus during the female pregnancy.
A 'Hysterectomy' can be done in two different methods: vaginal and abdominal. In a vaginal hysterectomy, the female reproductive organs will be removed through the vagina, a method that involves fewer complications. When the organs that are being removed are too large, or the surgery is being done for a reason related to cancer, an abdominal hysterectomy will be performed, removing the reproductive system through the patient's lower stomach.
As this kind of surgery leaves the female patient without the ability to bear children, this operation is done only for a few medical circumstances:
A hysterectomy is performed by a gynecologist and there are three techniques available for this kind of procedure. When undergoing an abdominal hysterectomy, it can be performed in a laparoscopic method or the traditional open surgery method. In the laparoscopic surgery, there is minimal skin trauma as there will be three small incisions in the abdomen area and 2 other small holes depending on the specific surgery and with the aid of a tiny camera, the removal is done through the small incisions.
The surgeon can also perform the traditional operation of an open abdominal surgery, performing a vertical incision from the lower abdomen to the lowest point possible in the pelvis. This procedure grants the surgeon maximum access to the area.
The least traumatic surgery is the vaginal hysterectomy which is done entirely through the vaginal canal. This surgery will include a shorter hospital stay and a shorter healing time.
After surgery, no matter what technique has been used, the female patient will remain in the hospital for a period of 1-3 days. The healing period for a hysterectomy is fairly quick as this is a considered a minimal invasive surgical procedure. The patient will be prescribed pain medication after the surgery that she can take if needed. After the procedure, there can be some vaginal bleeding that will pass with time. It is recommended that patients resume their normal daily activities as soon as possible in order to avoid blood clots are other complications.
