
The term endometriosis is used to describe a gynecological-medical condition in which tissue similar to the endometrial tissue (the cells in the lining of the uterus cavity) develops outside of the uterus, elsewhere in the body.
The tissue that develops outside the uterus most commonly grows on the ovaries or the pelvic cavity area which includes the fallopian tubes, the pelvic sidewall and in the rectal-vaginal septum. In rare cases will the tissue spread to organs outside the abdominal area.
Endometriosis will usually affect woman during their reproductive years, starting from puberty. As menopause begins, the estrogen level drops and symptoms usually stop appearing.
Endometriosis can cause different symptoms and does not have universal effects with women who develop the disease. Some women never have ' Endometriosis' diagnosed until encountering fertility problems and going for a checkup.

Pelvic Pain - The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain, specifically in the area where the tissue develops. This pain usually manifests during the monthly cycles, sexual intercourse, bowel movements or while ovulating. The pain can be mild or severe.
Irregular Bleeding – Some women can experience bleeding in between cycles or after intercourse. Sometimes the bleeding during menstruation might suddenly be heavier.
Infertility – Women who have are having fertility problems may be diagnosed with endometriosis as this disease may lead to anatomical irregularities.

There are several methods of treatment for endometriosis which include: prescription pain killers, hormonal treatment and surgery.
The preferred method is recommended by your physician according to purpose of the treatments (to stop the pain or solve the infertility problems) and the specific type and location of the endometriosis. Surgery is performed either when the pain is too severe which will lead to hysterectomy, or in order to remove the tissue and unnecessary growths through laparoscopic surgery.
The hormonal treatment is given for lighter cases in order to balance the unstable estrogen levels, which exacerbated the endometriosis in the first place.
