Cataract surgery is a vision correction procedure and one of the most common eye surgeries. Cataract is the cloudiness of the eye's crystalline lens and may develop from trauma (traumatic cataract); a disease, such as diabetes (secondary cataract) or from old age.
The lens is the clear part of the eye and used to focus light or image on the retina (a light sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye). When the lens is cloudy, the image seen is blurry. Cataract can occur in either or both eyes
The common symptoms of a cataract are:
During cataract procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced by a lens implant, which is an artificial lens. The lens implant is a plastic intraocular lens (IOL) also known as multifocal IOLs or accommodating IOLs. There are two types of cataract surgery, PhacoemulsificationA modern cataract surgery in which the eye's internal lens is emulsified with an ultrasonic handpiece and aspirated from the eye (Source: Wikipedia) and Extracapsular surgeryAn eye surgery in which the lens of the eye is removed while the elastic capsule that covers the lens is left partially intact to allow implantation of an intraocular lens (Source: Encyclopedia of Surgery), as your doctor can explain the differences and which is the recommended procedure for you.
