Nose surgery, also known as Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) is a surgical procedure performed in relation with two major reasons: aesthetics and functional. When nose surgery is performed for aesthetic reasons, it is a type of plastic surgery.
A nose job can also serve a functional purpose and correct several breathing difficulties related to a deviated spectrum or birth defects and trauma.
Nose surgery, similar to other facial surgeries is designed to alter and reshape a certain aspect of our appearance. The procedure may include one or more of the following:
The size and shape of your nose has a great impact on how you look. Even a small alteration of the nose can redefine the characteristics of the face.
When you choose to undergo a nose surgery it is very important to define your expectations and to make sure your plastic surgeon is highly experienced and has a clear image of your wishes.
Many patients undergoing rhinoplasty or Sinus surgery Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a surgical modality for some diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses, the air-filled spaces, connecting the nasal cavity, within the bones of the skull and face. also choose additional facial surgery including chin augmentation or eyelid surgery. Some procedures may be performed at the same time.
As in any other plastic surgery, rhinoplasty has its risks. The risks may include infection or bleeding, a nasal obstruction creating breathing difficulties, anesthesia complication and the dissatisfaction with the surgery outcome.
The risks can be decreased when the plastic surgeon is experienced.
The majority of nose jobs include an incision made in the vertical strip of skin (the columella) separating the nostrils. When the patient requires a minor reshaping, the incision is made inside the nose, where they are invisible.
Following the incision the skin of the nose is lifted from the underlying structure (the bone and cartilage). Now the plastic surgeon can examine the nasal anatomy.
When the bone is exposed the plastic surgeon can perform the requested reshaping- to remove or rearrange a certain amount of underlying bone and cartilage, or to sculpt the cartilage and reduce its size.
When the reshaping is complete the skin is placed over the new frame and the incisions are closed.
Your surgeon may apply a splint to the outside of the nose to assist with retaining the new shape during your healing.
After rhinoplasty you will notice some swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes. The nose will probably ache and you might also suffer from a headache. These are all common side effects of rhinoplasty and will heal in a few weeks.
Nose jobs are performed in many countries; it is a common plastic surgery. The surgery may include different procedures. Therefore the rhinoplasty cost will vary between patients. The different procedures depend on your requested outcome and your nose physiology.
Whether you choose to undergo a rhinoplasty due to functional reasons and breathing difficulties or to achieve a new and improved cosmetic appearance you should aim for the best.
