Liposuction plastic surgery, also known as Lipoplasty, is a procedure performed in order to remove excess fat tissue from different parts of the body, usually the stomach, thighs, hips, chin area, buttocks and under the arms.

This is a procedure done for aesthetic purposes only, when people want to improve their self image. In a liposuction cosmetic surgery, a special instrument is used to vacuum out the fat tissue from the patient's body. The surgeon will use a marker to mark the "suction zone" and will not exceed it. Usually, 2-5 liters of fat are extracted and the surgeon will stop there due to the risk of tissue damage. Once the liposuction is done, an elastic band will be rapped around the surgery area, or areas, which the patient will have to wear for 3-6 weeks post surgery in order to keep the swelling down.

Am I a valid candidate for liposuction surgery?

The fat distribution in our body is often dictated by genetics, this means exercise and a healthy diet can't always help you improve your body shape and size. Are there special preparations I must undergo for a liposuction surgery?

Prior to this procedure, there is the routine checkup at the surgeon and at the anesthesiologist you must attend. In addition, it is important to have a blood test done in order to make sure that you are not anemic or suffer from blood clotting problems.

Can asymmetry form in my body parts that are treated?

The liposuction is performed on both sides of the body separately (The stomach, both hands, both thighs or both legs). It is possible the surgeon will extract more fat on one side, but this rarely occurs. It is important to choose an experienced surgeon to perform the surgery to avoid these situations.

What is the recovery period of a liposuction surgery?

You will be able to return to your normal activities within a week, but you will have to wear a supportive garment while functioning during this period. You should refrain from sports and heavy lifting for a period of 3 weeks.

Will the liposuction surgery leave scarring?

Today's surgeons use very small cannulas in order to perform the liposuction procedure. This leads to minimal scarring, virtually invisible to the human eye. If there is any scarring left, they will fade and disappear with time.
