A cosmetic facelift, also known as Rhytidectomy, is one type of plastic surgery performed in order to rejuvenate ones appearance and achieve a younger look. This goal is reached by surgically removing excess skin and tightening the muscles and tissue in the facial area.
A facelift is performed when patients are interested in altering their look and improving their self image. This is a surgery done for aesthetic purposes only in order to reshape a person's appearance. The facelift surgery results will last for 7 to 10 years, while other options available such as fillers, injections and different facelift creams will last for shorter periods.
As we grow older, and are subjected to sunlight exposure over the years, our facial skin tends to become less elastic, which leads to skin wrinkles and lines around our face. These lines can appear around our jaw line, neck, forehead and cheek bones. When getting a facelift, one can choose to have a complete facelift or "tighten" only specific parts of the face: neck, the eyebrow area or the lower part of the face.
The purpose of this procedure is to minimize the facial lines and creases around the face, tighten the sagging skin and try to eliminate fatty deposits under the chin and jaw.
When you choose to go through a facelift surgery, it is important that you know exactly what you want to improve. In the consultations prior to the procedure with your physician, you will have to describe this in detail in order for them to recommend the suitable procedure for you. It is important that you do not have unrealistic expectations before going in for surgery.
In a common facelift procedure, an incision is made from the hairline down in front of the ear and then around the ear back to the hairline. If the procedure includes the removal of a sagging jaw line, another incision is made under the chin.
Once the incision is made, the skin is lifted and separated from the deeper tissues under it in the cheek and neck area of the face. At this point, the skin is pulled back to tighten the muscles of the face and neck and the surgeon can also remove the excess fat from under the skin, if this is required. Finally, the skin is lifted once again and the incisions are medically sewn up and closed with staples.
At the end of the surgery the face is wrapped up in medical bandages and the surgeon will leave a small plastic drainage tube where the incision has been done, in order for the leftover blood and tissue to drain into a medical bag after the surgery.
The recovery process is fairly short. The patient is kept under care for 24 hours and then released home. The medical bandages will be taken off a few days after the surgery, and the general recovery period is usually 10 days.
A facelift is a common cosmetic procedure available in many countries, which can be carried out in different manners. The exact facelift surgery will depend on the patient's desired outcome and face condition. The cost of a facelift surgery will vary from patient to patient depending on these critirias.
It is important you aim for the best surgeons available as a facelift is a sensitive procedure performed on a critical part of your body and you of course want the maximum results.
