An eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure performed on the patient's eyelid, mainly for aesthetic reasons. One will undergo eyelid surgery in order to modify the eyelid and improve the upper eyelid's look, the lower eyelid's look or both.
The eyelid surgery is done in order to repair droopy upper and lower eyelids, and present a new, more alert look for the individual. To reach these results, the surgeon will remove excess skin, muscle and fat from the patients eyelids and pull the new skin back.
As we grow older, our eyelids begin to stretch and the muscles which are supposed to hold them weaken and then the eyelids begin to sag and drop. As a result of this, excess fat will accumulate over and under the eye and bring your eyebrows to drop, your eyelids to become saggy and cause permanent "bags" under the eyes. This will cause you to look older and may also abstract your field of vision. An eyelid surgery will address these problems.
The eyelid surgery is sometimes performed with another cosmetic procedure on the patients face, such as a Facelift Surgery. When you go for a consultation regarding facial cosmetic surgery, you must be precise as to what you want to repair and the physician will recommend the treatments you should go through.
The eyelid surgery is typically performed with external incisions, in locations designed to hide the scarring within the structural region of the eye. If the surgery is performed on both your upper and lower eyelid, the surgeon will begin with the upper region, performing an incision above the eye in the crease of the upper eyelid. At this point the excess skin, excess fat and a small amount of tissue will be removed from under the skin. The surgeon will then sew up the incision with fine stitching which will barely leave a visible scar. The incision may be closed often by using surgical tape or a skin adhesive, depending on the incision made.
The lower eyelid incision is done beneath the lower eyelash line, where it will be optimally hidden. The surgeon will remove the excess skin, fat and tissue from under the eye through this incision and then close it up the same way the upper eyelid incision has been closed.
If there will be no skin removal as part of the process and the doctor recommends the removal of fatty tissue alone, there will be a different incision done, one hidden inside the lower eyelid. This procedure is called a Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty.
The surgery usually takes between one to three hours, depending on the exact procedure being done. The surgeon will often use a local anesthesia and perform the surgery while you are awake. General anesthesia can also be used if required. The patient is released from the clinic on the same day to recuperate, given a special ointment and eye drops to keep the eyes from drying up. The healing process is fairly quick and you will be able to resume normal activities usually after 10 days.
The eyelid surgery is available in many countries, sometimes done as part of a total facial makeover. The cost of an eyelid procedure, of course, depends on the exact treatment you will receive according to your specific desired outcome, eye condition and surgery preference.
