A Breast Lift surgery, also known as Mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure performed for aesthetic reasons only. The surgery is done in order to reshape and change the look of the breast, usually lifting it in order to produce a younger look.

During the procedure the surgeon can perform a number of actions that will alter the breasts and give them a better and younger look. During the breast lift operation, the surgeon will perform 2 or 3 incisions on the patient's breasts (depending on their condition), lift the breast tissue, remove excess skin and reposition the nipple and areola if needed and sew up the incisions made. After the surgery, your chest will be tightly wrapped to hold the breast firmly in place. The bandages will be taken off within two weeks of the operation.

Sometimes women choose to have a breast lift combined with a breast augmentation surgery. After the surgery you should feel better about your self image.

Are there any special preparations I must undergo for a breast lift surgery?

The preparations you must undergo for this surgery are no different from the preparations for every surgery. You will have to meet with your surgeon and the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure, plus get a blood test done to ensure you are not anemic or suffer from blood clotting problems.

Can I develop a post-operation infection in my breasts?

As in every invasive surgery, there is a chance that an infection will develop in the surgical wound, post-operation. If there is an infection, it will happen within 3 days of the operation and be treated by antibiotics. Some time after a breast lift surgery, patients may develop little pimples around the nipples. In most cases, an antibiotic cream is the solution for this problem and there is no scaring from the phenomena.

Can my breasts sag again after the operation?

Your breasts will not sag at all in the years following the operation. However, they can sag once again 10 years or so after the operation. Anyhow, this will be to a lesser extent then the condition your breasts were prior to your first surgery.

If I have this surgery combined with breast augmentation, are the implants dangerous?

Recent medical studies show that there is no correlation between silicone implants and cancer and that they are completely safe for your body.
Within a few weeks after the surgery, you will be able to return to your normal activities. This also includes flying or going diving with the implants as there is no concern whatsoever with these changes.

What is the recovery period of a breast lift surgery?

A few days after the surgery your general feeling will be back to normal. You will be able to return to your all normal activities within a week and a half. You should refrain from sports and heavy lifting for a period of 4-6 weeks.

Will a breast lift surgery hurt my ability to breast feed?

A breast lift will affect your ability to breast feed, but not as much as a breast reduction surgery. During surgery some of the glands that are responsible for the production of milk will be removed as well as some of the tubes which lead the milk from in the breast to the nipple. Thus there will be an impact on breast feeding. This is something you must discuss with your surgeon prior to the operation.
