Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer is a cancer formed in the kidney tissues and includes two main types of cancer: Renal Cell Carcinoma (formed in the small tubes within the kidney) and Urothelial Cell Carcinoma (formed in the center of the kidney where urine collects).

The human body has two kidneys which are located on each side of the spine above the waist. When cancerous cells start forming in the tissues of the kidney, it is mostly diagnosed as one of the two types of kidney cancer mentioned above.

Renal Cell Carcinoma & Urothelial Cell Carcinoma

These two types of kidney cancer differentiate in the location of the cancerous cells.

The Renal Cell Carcinoma forms in the lining of the tiny tubes within the kidney that filter the blood and remove the waste products.

The Urothelial Cell Carcinoma (also known as Transitional cell carcinoma) forms in the urinary system within the kidney which includes the urinary bladder and accessory organs. As in renal cell carcinoma, also this type of cancer forms in the lining of in the inner parts of the organs.

Kidney Cancer Symptoms

Kidney cancer symptoms will not necessarily appear as the tumor forms. It is important to know that symptoms may appear only as the tumor has grown and it's in later stages.

These symptoms can include:

• Blood in the urine
• Progression of a mass in the abdominal area
• A pain in the side of your body that does not go away
• Lack of appetite
• Sudden weight loss
• Weakness and fatigue (caused by Anemia)

Kidney Cancer Treatment

As in all types of cancer, treatment for kidney cancer depends on the type and stage of the disease.

Renal Cell Carcinoma is usually not treated with chemotherapy or radiation as it is resistant to these types of treatments. A nephrectomy alone is performed, removing the cancer by surgery. If the cancer metastasized A condition where the cancerous tumor has spread to other areas of the body., specific medication will be given to the patient to treat this.

Urothelial Cell Carcinoma is also treated mainly by surgery and the removal of the tumor. With this type of cancer, chemotherapy treatment is sometimes given post-surgery, depending on your doctor's decision and cancer stage.
