Endometrial cancer, also known as Uterine cancer, refers to cancerous cells that form in the lining of the female uterus (the endometrium). Most endometrial tumors are known to be adenocarcinomas (cancerous cells that produce and release different fluids).
This cancer mostly appears in older women, ages 50-65 and only 5% of all cases appear in women under the age of 40. Most types of endometrial cancer originate from the cells found in the single layer that line the endometrium and form the endometrial glands.
Cancer research shows that there is a correlation between excessive estrogen exposure and this type of cancer.
Most symptoms of endometrial cancer include vaginal bleeding of sort, but the cancer can manifest itself in other ways also:
The specific set of treatments of endometrial cancer depends on the type of tumor and the stage it is in.
The primary treatment is surgical and will usually be an abdominal hysterectomy, which means the removal of the uterus. Depending on the tumor, the surgeon can decide to remove the whole uterus or just perform a partial removal as well as removing both ovaries. If the specific cancer will demand it, the surgeon will remove additional tissue around the uterus, to make sure that it hasn't and won't spread.
Radiation and chemotherapy treatments are individually considered for different stages of endometrial cancer, usually for patients who are at increased risk for recurrence of the disease.
