When looking through medical centers to undergo treatment, patients have a number of options to choose from. There is of course the option of a hospital; then there is the option of a smaller medical clinic (public and private clinics, Inpatient and outpatient clinics) and finally a patient can undergo treatments on a large medical campus that includes hospitals, research facilities, med schools and other healthcare facilities.
Choosing a medical center to undergo a desired procedure is an integral part of having surgery or planning your medical trip abroad as patients naturally prefer to undergo treatments in an accredited or recognized medical center that is known for its excellence in the medical field.
Medical Centers
Hospitals – A hospital is medical institution that is responsible for providing patients with different types of healthcare services. These services can include emergency and trauma treatment, inpatient care (for patients undergoing surgery or extremely ill patients) and long term hospitalization stays and outpatient services.
Most hospitals are traditionally staffed with surgeons, medical specialists, physicians and nurses who attend to the patients' medical needs during their stay.
Clinics – A medical clinic is defined a healthcare facility that is designed to provide patients with different treatments and minor surgical procedures. These procedures are usually performed in an outpatient basis, but not only as there are clinics that can admit inpatients for overnight stays.
These small medical institutions deal both with general medicine or specialize in different medical fields (physical or mental) and depending on the clinic, they can be both publicly funded clinics or can alternatively operate as private clinics.
Medical Campus – There are many medical campuses around the world that normally include a number of medical facilities including a hospital (or several hospitals), a medical university campus, medical research facilities and training programs for doctors, surgeons and nurses.
These medical campuses are usually located on or near a university campus, thus making the cooperation between the educational and medical branches a much easier and smoother process.
When planning your medical trip, it can include treatments in anyone of these options as patients can receive treatments abroad in hospitals, public and private clinics and large medical campuses.
A patient can do the research or turn to a medical tourism facilitator who will provide all the information regarding recommended medical centers for specific treatments or surgeries. Depending on one's objective, a certain type of medical center may be preferred over another.
